The Batcave, 2.0 (Print comics)

For those times in life when you need to have a serious talk.

Being an idealistic sucker, I've decided to start reading Spider-Man again. There's a wide range of reasons for this decision, and I could elaborate if anyone's interested. Probably not.

Anyway, I'm looking at Spider-Man: Noir. It's supposed to be pretty good, and I like the idea of superheroes getting re-examined as pulp heroes. Whether this is that or just another alternate universe remains to be seen.

Another alternate universe worth mentioning is Marvel 2099, which was pretty cool back in the day (1992 to 1998, when it was canceled). It looks like Marvel is finally starting to recognize that series; Spidey 2099 appeared in the new Spider-Man game (which I haven't played) and there was a miniseries crossing over the main universe and 2099 about two years back. In addition, Spider-Man 2099 is getting released as a trade paperback, and I'm excited. It's only the first ten issues, and you know Marvel will take their sweet time in releasing all 46 issues, but you take what you get.

This has been your daily dose of parentheses poisoning.

I can't say I did. There were lots of things that were cool about it, but at the same time it felt like Morrison was writing for himself. "Oh man, let's have the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh fight people with a baseball bat!" The weird stuff just outweighed the cool stuff for me.

That was actually my favorite part, especially the chapter with "Hobo Bruce" and Honor Jackson.

I could go on a train about how badly Batman's been written for the last year or so, but it's late and im posting from my phone. Grant Morrison, although a talented writer in some aspects, has just made too many bad decisions with the caped crusader. Between the having Grayson take up the mantle of the bat and the whole "magic bullet" scenario, i just give up on Batman for right now. And i didnt even mention Batman Inc. (shudder) Some of my favorite stories came outta Batman though, namely Knightfall (Azrael kicks ass) and Hush (Jim Lee also kicks ass). So id rather remember a better time when there was only one batman, who never used a gun before, not even on Darkseid.

I don't mind the idea of Batman Inc. I haven't read any of it yet, so I can't comment on how it's executed, but it seems cool. But, hey, I thought Bruce controlling an army of cyborg Batmen from the cave was really cool.

Knightfall rocks. It gave us Bane.

It did. Bane in Secret Six is awesome. Reformed-Villian-turned-anti-hero-for-hire pseudo-adopting Scandal Savage, and her just going with it? Yessssssssss.

Anyone have any idea why the DC universe is going screwy again? I don't mean Flashpoint (Although I'm wanting to pick up Batman the Dark Knight of Vengence, Abin Sur: The Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, etc.) I'm talking about the complete renumbering of 52 of DC's series; this seems like a pretty bad idea.
